Jimmy Rogers Sloppy Drunk Guitar Lesson by Johnny Burgin w special guest Bruce Ewan

The other day I got to play a duo show with the excellent harp player/singer Bruce Ewan at Red's Broken Spoke in Baker, WV, and the last song we did was "Sloppy Drunk". The light bulb went off that I never did anything with this tempo, which never fails to connect with audiences, so here we are! Bruce and I play a bit at the beginning of the video, and you can see what a great harp player he is. (He's the younger brother of one of my favorite guitarists, Bobby Radcliff, and Bruce did a great Latin-influenced blues CD "Bluesero" I highly recommend.) Then I talk about Muddy's basslines, and then go on to the really classy guitar parts Jimmy Rogers puts in. Down the road I will be going back to some of the great Sonny Boy Williamson (John Lee, Sonny #1) original versions of blues classics, but for now, both of these parts are GREAT to learn. And comparing the two versions says it all as far as the evolution from the Bluebird/acoustic urban styles to the full-throated Chicago electric blues of the mid 50s on. Have fun learning or brushing up on this great song.
