SUNSET SANDSTORM BY CROHN44 (MY HARDEST DEMON) | GEOMETRY DASH

I always knew that my playing capability would skyrocket once I switched from mobile to PC. But seeing Black Blizzard go from being a completely unapproachable beast to not even my hardest in the span of a year, especially with school getting in the way as it has, was a total shock even for me. Like its predecessor, I absolutely adore Sunset Sandstorm, and I think it’s one of the greatest Extremes of all time. Unlike its predecessor, though, I was TERRIFIED of it. This was, without question, one of the most intimidating things I’ve ever faced down in a video game… and I’ve been trying to 100% (well, 106%) Super Meat Boy since 2022, for God’s sake! Going into Sunset Sandstorm, I expected the same thing of it that I did with Black Blizzard - an absolute monster that pushes my mentality to its absolute limits for months. But by some miracle, I got it done even faster than I got Black Blizzard done, and I’m so, so happy, because I get the feeling I would’ve started to hate this level if I got stuck on it. So let’s finally review it, shall we? The gameplay is completely bizarre and nonsensical, but that’s what makes it so much fun! This level took me absolutely ages to learn (and almost 6K attempts - for reference, only five completions have taken me more attempts than just the learning process for Sunset), but actually being able to put it together was just SO satisfying. Especially the memory part and basically everything in the first half of the cube. It’s also a little bit funny how this is one of the few Extreme Demons that wasn’t broken with the release of 2.2, despite literally utilizing bugs in the physics engine of the game for its gameplay. Something about that just cracks me up. (Well, technically there was one broken click, but that click was extremely tame as far as “breaking the physics engine” goes.) The only part I really did not like was the double chains of pink orbs in the first 10% of the level; not only were these much more frustrating than the one in Black Blizzard, but the transitions into and out of them weren’t exactly the most fun gameplay I’ve ever played in my life, either. Additionally, only about half of the red orbs in the predrop worked. Either way, though, this was overall incredibly fun! Maybe it’s just because I didn’t spend as much time on it as I could’ve, but who knows? Gameplay: 89/100 While I may not have the same emotional attachment to this level’s decoration that I had with Black Blizzard, I still think this level looks absolutely PHENOMENAL. The drop is obviously my favorite part decoration-wise, but every other part pulls its own weight extremely well. If this was made after 2.2, I think it would’ve been cool to experiment with shaders to give the drop a distorted effect (as though you’re suffering heatstroke) but, eh… Decoration: 105/100 It’s a Creo song. I’m not even gonna bother justifying my rating. Song: 100/100 Most of this level has excellent sync, especially the first cube, where you’ll often veer off the actual path for the sake of syncing to the new pattern in the song. I think that’s really cool. It does fall off a bit around the memory part, but it doesn’t detract that much. Sync: 99/100 Is this level derivative? Yes. Does it expand on the ideas of what it derives from in an incredibly unique way? Also yes. Originality: 99.9/100 Overall: 492.9/500 (Absolutely Amazing) I love this level to death. I genuinely cannot think of a better level I could have chosen as a new hardest after Black Blizzard. Please, try this out if you’re around the skill level. It’ll be absolutely brutal, but even more rewarding. Difficulty-wise, this is obviously my new hardest by a considerable margin, though not as much as Black Blizzard was, but that’s besides the point. What’s important is how this affects my hardest list. Not only does this kick Glide out of my Top 3 and Aftermath out of my Top 5, but it also kicks 1945 out of my Top 10. For the first time in over 2,500 days of playing, my Top 10 is exclusively made up of Extreme Demons. Which… wow. Shoutout to @renavelvett on Twitter for the thumbnail. It looks great :D I do not plan on doing anything harder than this ANYTIME soon. Eventually, that will change, and I’ll start pushing my limits more than ever before. But for now, having Sunset Sandstorm as my hardest is something I’m content with. Thanks to everyone who stuck with me through all of this. I love you guys.
