Two Malts from Brittany: Armorik 15yo (Warenghem), Kornog Roch'Hir (Glann Ar Mor)

Frequently overshadowed in the current global glut of whisk(e)y is the great outpost of Celtic culture on the European mainland, Brittany in northwestern France. They've been making some very solid malts over there there for several decades now, and somehow still get mostly ignored by the big whiskeytube channels out there. Time to change that... and, since Warenghem distillery has just released something of a landmark bottling for them (the oldest French single malt ever [EDIT: there have been single casks that have been older, but I think this is at least the oldest batched release]), and it's affordable, let's do a video about it. With a suitable sparring partner, of course. Stats: - Armorik 15 Year Old Single Malt Whisky Breton (Distillerie Warenghem, Lannion; ex-bourbon and ex-sherry, 1500 bottles, bottled 2022; natural color, unchillfiltered; 46% ABV), 88+/100 - Kornog Roch'Hir Single Malt Whisky (Glann Ar Mor, Pleubian; no age statement, bottled circa 2022; natural color, unchillfiltered; 46% ABV), 87/100 The limited edition Armorik 15... god damn it's good. I was expecting something solid after that Sauternes cask I reviewed last year (   • Armorik 9yo Sauternes Cask Single Mal...   ), but this is up there with some of the best sub-$100 malts on the market. And it does what it does with no tricks - just tons of nutty, fruit-forward barley, a mix of darn good casks, and a whisper of peat for color. Highly recommended, well done indeed. Meanwhile the Kornog, the heavily peated variation from Glann Ar Mor further east, is just bonkers. It's got a good dollop of maritime peat, sure, but it's also getting locally-malted barley, long fermentation in wooden washbacks, direct-fired distillation, condensation in old-school worm tubs, and seaside maturation: this stuff has got _character_, y'all. Think peated riesling with a side of burning flowers and you'll be close. It's still a little young and edgy but if you think the genre of peated whisky has completely run out of things to surprise you with, this is absolutely one to hunt down. So yeah, whiskeytube, I think it's safe to say that y'all are sleeping on Brittany. Let's get the hype train rolling, shall we?
