Today I distract myself from my controlled starvation by way of a sample I've been meaning to taste out literally for years: the first ever release to come out from the Yuza distillery in northern Honshu. You can catch up on the story at https://www.nomunication.jp/distiller... - the short version is, the Kinryu consortium (mainly known for shochu and sake) wanted to diversify and have now produced the first ever malt distillery in Yamagata prefecture, across the mountains from Miyagikyo. Unpeated barley, wooden washbacks, two smallish indirectly fired Forsyths pot stills, dunnage warehousing: there's really no gimmicks here, just darn good malt whisky with tiny output. Here's how their first attempt went: - Yuza Distillery 1st Edition 2022 Single Malt Japanese Whisky (Yuza, Yamagata; distilled 2018, 3 years old, aged in ex-bourbon casks; 61% ABV), 87+/100 It's expensive. Yes, even more than you might think. And only 180 bottles of this went to the US market, so it's going to be a pain to find. That said, this is a damn good malt by any standard, mingling a ton of pome fruit and honey with a really fun five-spice powder thing. Think Roseisle (   • Reviewing the Entire 2023 Diageo Spec...   ) but way better at a younger age. Proof positive that you don't need heavy peat or a sopping wet PX cask to make a seriously good three-year-old.
