Ultimatum Rum x6: Infinitum 12, 8yo Blend, Jamaica, Barbados, Venezuela, Panama

So it turns out that Van Wees in the Netherlands, best known for their The Ultimate whisky line (a consistent feature on the channel), also bottles a few rums. No sugar or colorant added to any of them, which is always nice. And as they've conveniently packed a bunch of their selections into a sixfold set of test tubes, let's try out what they've got: - Ultimatum "Infinitum 12" Finest Rum (Caribbean, pot-distilled; bottled circa 2021; 40% ABV), 83/100 [n.b. the 12 is not actually an age statement] - Ultimatum 8 Year Old "High Quality Blend" Selected Rum (blended from 8 different rums, 50% pot distilled; bottled circa 2021; 46% ABV), 84/100 - Ultimatum 4 Year Old Jamaica Rum (distilled 2017, aged 3 years and then finished 1.5 years in first-fill tawny port cask, bottled 7/21, 815 bottles; 47.8% ABV), 84+/100 - Ultimatum 4 Year Old Barbados Rum (distilled 2017, aged 3 years and then finished 1.5 years in an ex-Whitlaw/Highland Park sherry butt no. 439, bottled 7/21, 828 bottles; 48.9% ABV), 86/100 - Ultimatum 7 Year Old Venezuela Rum (distilled 2014, aged 5 years and then finished 2 years in an ex-Edradour bourbon barrel, bottled 7/21, 328 bottles; 47.9% ABV), 81/100 - Ultimatum 10 Year Old Panama Rum (distilled 2011, aged 6 years and then finished 4 years in an ex-Ballechin bourbon barrel, bottled 7/21, 286 bottles; 49.8% ABV), 86/100 It was the 8yo blend that I was most curious about it, and to my relief it came through: less than 25 euros gets you a very competent, versatile, balanced 46% blended rum. Think of it as a more subdued, more wood-driven alternative to TCRL's High Seas, maybe. Meanwhile the Infinitum 12 - which may or may not be 12 years old - is also pretty solid, a very clean pot still rum (reminiscent more of Barbados or St. Lucia than Jamaica) that would, of course, be better at the kind of strengths found in every other rum here. What surprised me was some of the finishes. I was expecting these to be gimmicks, but many of them are absolutely brilliant: the Barbados finished in ex-sherry Highland Park might be the best young Foursquare I've ever had, and the little Panamanian that took a four-year dip in peated Ballechin is just as delicious as it is hilariously, gloriously bonkers. Even the port cask Jamaica is pretty solid, with the port supporting the distillate rather than overwhelming it. The Venezuelan is a little bit lame but I'd say we're a good 5 for 6 here.
