Seoul Backstreet Walk: Cheonggu Station to Sindang Station

Siindang-dong is a largely residential east-central Seoul neighborhood in the Jung district. It's a is a "legal" neighborhood which encompasses several smaller administrative neighborhoods stretching from Cheonggye Stream at its northernmost border to just past Beotigogae Station at its southern end (see https://bit.ly/3uMy9f0). Sindang is well known for Tteokboki Town, a part of the neighborhood where numerous restaurants sell the spicy stir-fried rice cakes called tteokbokki. The first one, 'Makbolim Tteokboki', opened in 1953 and is still in operation. Another Sindang-dong landmark is the house where Korean Army General Park Chung Hee lived with his family from 1958 until just after he staged a coup that ushered him into a dictatorial presidency until his assassination in 1979. For a year after his death, his daughter lived there alone. In 2013 she became the first female Korean president and the first born after the founding of the Republic of Korea. In December of 2016 she became the first Korean president to be impeached and then the first to be removed from office in March of 2017. This walk cuts through the backstreets of the northeast part of the neighborhood. We start at Gate 2 of Cheonggu Station (Seoul Subway Lines 5 & 6), where we exist onto Dasan-ro. This is the main north-south road through Sindang-dong. After heading north around 100 meters, we turn east into the backstreets (01:07). At first, we're surrounded by low-rise apartments and small office buildings, and we see very few shops. Then at 05:51, we come to a bigger street where we find a variety of shops. We head east on that street, then turn north onto more backstreets. We repeat the north, east, north, east pattern as we go. At 11:24 we come to a part of the neighborhood where the buildings are older. Here, we pass through a local market area where the businesses are aimed squarely at the local residents. I always enjoy places like this. Most of the shops and eateries are small and independent. Some of them are vendors selling a small selection of very specific items, like a shop selling homemade tofu and a selection of cooking oils and spices. At 16:30, we cut through a small alley to Toegye-ro, the street that marks the northern border of Sindang-dong on its eastern side. We turn east and enter Gate 3 of Sindang Station (Subway Lines 2 & 6) to end the walk. ROUTE MAP: https://bit.ly/3uEhDxH META: I filmed this on the afternoon of February 16 2024, in 4K@60 with a DJI Osmo Action 4. The temperature was around 7°C/45°F.
