Seoul Walk: Sindang Station to Majang Station

I can't count the times I've walked the western end of Majang-ro between Sindang Station and the Dongdaemun Design Plaza, or the eastern end between Majang Station and Cheonho-daero. But I realized on one of my daily walks that I couldn't recall ever having walked it between Sindang and Majang Stations. So I decided it was time to take a look. We start this walk at Gate 11 of Sindang Station (Seoul Subway Lines 2 & 6). Rather than heading north to Majang-ro after through Gate 11, we cut onto a backstreet (01:45). At 02:24, we pass a small street named Majang-ro. If you aren't yet familiar with Korean street names, it's not uncommon for very short or narrow streets to be named for one of the streets it connects to. That's an indicator that the street addresses of the properties touching that street are associated with another street nearby. The Zenith is a modern apartment complex, but before we get past it we find some old, low buildings on the north side of the street. We see a few home improvement suppliers: lumber, doors, shelves, etc. This is a sign of things to come. The buildings beyond the Zenith, surrounding Central Market, are old and populated by dozens of dealers selling hardware, kitchen equipment, furniture for restaurants/cafes, dishes, cutlery, etc. If you're opening some sort of eatery or coffee shop in Seoul, you'll want to come here to find most of what you need. When we get to Toegye-ro 83-gil at 04:27, we turn north. Any of the small alleys to our right would take us straight into Central Marker, but we're not going there today. Instead, we walk a few more meters north to our target, Majang-ro, where we turn east after a quick look around. Here, on both sides of the streets, we see countless more of the same kinds of suppliers, even a little further north to Cheonggye Stream. At 07:39, we pass by Central Market's north entrance, then several more suppliers. Here, on the north side of the street, we find that several old buildings, once occupied by the same kinds of suppliers, have been torn down (late 2020) and a new high-rise going up in their place. The new building, an "officetel" (a building full of units available as both office and residential space), is scheduled to open in May, 2024. Finally, as we approach Hwanghak Intersection, where Majang-ro meets Nangye-ro (12:23), we put the suppliers behind us (I had no idea they covered such a large area). Across Nangye-ro, we move to the north side of Majang-ro and continue east (14:18). Now we're in a residential area, entering into four blocks of modern high-rise apartments, an area large enough to feel like an "apartment town". All four blocks were once populated by older, smaller buildings. The street view on Naver map goes back to March of 2010, and even then many of the buildings had been demolished. Some on the north side are still standing, most two- or three-stories, occupied by various small businesses, a chuch steeple rising up behind them from among some low-rise apartments. One interesting highlight is the apartment complex entrance at 21:15. The building here has the logos of 5 different apartment brands. I can't recall ever having seen that before. At 22:10 we come to Yangji Intersection and Muhak-ro. We continue east on Majang-ro, leaving the modern apartments behind for blocks of mostly residential, mostly older buildings, though we so see a handful of more recently constructed ones along the way. At we come to a place we've seen before. I filmed a long walk from Geumho Station, through Majang Meat Market, to Majang Station. That walk passed from the backstreets on the south side of Majang-ro to those on the north via Majang-ro 27-gil at 29:16. We're staying on Majang-ro for this walk. At 30:52, we come to Doseon Intersection and Gosanja-ro. We've seen some of this street to the north, where there's an entrance to Majang Meat Market, on the aforementioned long walk. But again, here we continue east. And that's where we enter more familiar ground. On that long walk, we left the meat market and headed back along Majang-ro 33-gil, which meets Majang-ro on at 33:28 on this walk. The we turned east through a residential area of more, though perhaps older, high-rises, to end at Majang Station (Subway Line 5) along the same route we're following here. Nothing has changed since then, and this walk ends not long after we enter Majang Station Gate 1 at 39:12. #4k #walkingtour #korea Route Map: https://bit.ly/40duUIR META: I filmed this in the afternoon of October 26, 2023, with a DJI Osmo Action 4 in 4K@60.
