Seoul Walk: Mok-dong Station to Yeongdeungpo-gu Office Station

The Yangcheon District in southern Seoul was carved out of the older Gandseo District in 1988. The entire area had heavily redeveloped through the 80s as a collection of dense residential neighborhoods dominated by high-rise apartments. The name "Yangcheon" was associated with the area as far back as 1310, near the end of the Goryeo Dynasty. We start out in the Yancheon-gu neighborhood of Mok-dong inside Mok-dong station (Seoul Subway Line 5). We step out of Gate 4 onto Omok-ro (01:04) and, as we look around, immediately see some high rise apartments. I visited Mok-dong several times between 1994 and the early 2000s to visit the immigration office. It was nearly always a dreadful experience. It has dramatically improved since, but I rarely need to go there now that I'm a permanent resident. In past times, the area of Mok-dong was known for horse breeding. By the the early 1980s, it was one of the poorest neighborhoods in Seoul. Since the redevelopment carried out across the district, it's become an upper middle-class, semi-affluent mass of overpriced apartments. The construction of modern tower apartments like those in the distance at 03:55, often replacing older apartment blocks, continues that reality. At 11:22, I've had to mute the volume as we approach Gate 1 of Omokgyo Station (Subway Line 5). A nearby shop was blasting a well-known K-Pop song. These sometimes get flagged for copyright issues when uploading videos. To avoid having to go through the process of uploading and processing the video again, I preemptively eliminated the song from the video (then ended up having to upload it again anyway after I noticed some errors in the text labels). At 17:02 we come to Omok-gyo (Omok Bridge). According to Naver Map, it's hear that we're passing out of Yangcheon District and into Yeongdeungpo District. With the opening of two train lines in 1899 and 1905, this area became a major transportation and commerce hub. During the rapid industrialization of Korea from the 1960s, the population of the district exploded along with the growth of its manufacturing industry. In the 1990s, the area's industrial sector suffered a decline and a transformation occurred in the 2000s. Today, the neighborhood of Mullae-dong, around Yeongdeungpo-gu Office Station, is one of Seoul's popular cultural hot spots, where restaurants, cafes, bakeries, and bars are found interspersed among the small workshops that still survive. After we descending from Omok Bridge (21:23), we continue a short distance along Yeongdeungpo-ro (Omok-ro ends on the bridge) before turning north through a local neighborhood. Here, we can see some buildings that date back to the 60s and 70s, as well as some small alleys that we pass by. We turn east again when we get to Yangsan-ro (36:49), which we follow past Yangpyeong Station (Subway Line 5). We pass a number of suppliers and small workshops, remnants of Korea's peak industrial era. Finally, at 43:16, we come to Dasan-ro. We see it only long enough to make a U-Turn into Gate 6 Yeongdeungpo-gu Office Station (Subway Line 5) where we end the walk. ROUTE MAP: https://bit.ly/3SAFNT1 META: I filmed this on the afternoon of January 30, 2024, in 4K@60 with an iPhone 14 Pro mounted on a DJI OM 5 gimbal. The temperature was ~7°C/45°F. I edited and rendered with DaVinci Resolve Studio 18.6.
