What made Magic Sam "magic"? He took ordinary ingredients and made them dazzling, and he took basically typical phrases and forms and made them as dramatic as possible. Delmark's "Magic Sam Live" (especially the Alex Club sides) sometimes seems like one high point after another on songs like "Mole's Blues", "Every Night About this Time", etc. I ran through 5 of the 6 choruses of "Mole's Blues" with a looper and tried to demonstrate as much of what Magic Sam did as I could.
