Meeting Your Host Family and First Day as an Au Pair | APOP

Today we're talking about ways to make the dreaded first meeting and first day better as an au pair. Thanks to @elsieelliott151 for the question! Our advice is pretty general, so whether you're meeting a new host family in Paris, or anywhere else in the world, our top tip is always try to relax! In reality, this is a day which we both absolutely dreaded. But, when it finally came, we were swept along for the ride and didn't think twice about whether we were asking the right questions. Although we have pretty different first day experiences, either way, your host family is likely to take the lead and ask YOU the questions. Soon enough, you'll be lounging around on their couch, eating their food and feeling right at home (hopefully!) However, if there are any awkward silences, simply ask a few questions such as; what's the weekly routine, what are your daily tasks and don't forget to ask your child about their favorite book, film, TV show, toy! But, don't worry - it should all come naturally. Although Edwina is throwing around more horror stories in this video (check out her last Au Pair Horror Story:    • Au Pair Horror Story | APOP  ) don't worry too much! But do have a back up plan, preferably a mobile number, an address and somewhere you can turn, whether it's a hostel or a family friend, if your host family forget you... (then maybe try and find a new host family ASAP.) As always, our motto in life is: fake it till you make it! If you feel uncomfortable, ACT comfortable and spend more time with the family until you're feeling right at home. For your first few weeks, make sure to be as approachable and sociable as possible - this could just be sitting in the same room as the family with a book. BY doing this, you'll build a better relationship which makes your whole experience easier! Let us know about your first day with your host family. Leave a comment or send your stories to [email protected]. We are currently in the editing phase of our book and want to add YOUR voice and story. We love short, long, silly or serious submissions!
