Saigon is an arcade game for the BBC Micro and Acorn Electron that takes its inspiration from the 1985 Capcom arcade game Commando. It was released by Tynesoft and written by 'Tequila', who is thought to be Gary Partis. The game is a vertically scrolling run and gun shooter. Your US Marine needs to free POWs from huts along the way. All the time Viet-Cong soldiers are shooting back. You have a machine gun with unlimited bullets and a few grenades. You can collect more grenades along the way. Rescuing a POW gives you an extra life. Your character moves quite quickly, which takes some getting used to. I almost lost control of him a few times, but when you get used to it, you can use the speed to get out of trouble and nimbly destroy your foes. However, there are many times when respawning can mean almost certain death for your next life. This is annoying and there is not a lot you can do about it. Despite not looking the greatest, the gameplay of this game is ok and for some reason, I always wanted to go back for another go. Tynesoft games can have a reputation for not being great, but this one has something positive about it that I can't quite put my finger on. This run was made on the 22nd September 2024 using the Pantheon emulator on PC. The score reached was 4,800 points.
