Anarchy Zone is an arcade shooter for the BBC Micro. It was released by Atlantis Software in 1988. The game was written by Rob Dulstone, who also wrote Creepy Cave, released the following year. The game takes its inspiration from Konami's 1983 shooter Gyruss. Like Gyruss, you face different waves of attacking aliens and have access to the entire edge of the screen. You can move round left or right, firing inwards as you go. Each level has its own password to allow you to access later screens more easily, though on this run, I started right at the beginning. If you clear a screen quickly enough, you are awarded a skill bonus (you can see the bonus counter ticking down every time you fire). The different waves have various attack patterns and can also need a different number of shots to kill. Some aliens are indestructible. In total, there are 32 zones to clear. This is a fun shooter and a little bit different from the majority of the type for the Acorn machines. Gameplay gets a little bit samey, but there is enough variety in the alien types of the 32 zones to keep you blasting away, especially if you liked Gyruss. Overall, pretty good to play and graphically good too. This run was made on the 25th August 2024 using the Pantheon emulator on PC. The score reached was 4,760 points.
