Vulgus - Capcom Arcade Stadium - PC - Normal - 59,800 points.

Vulgus is a 1984 vertically scrolling shooter arcade game by Capcom. It was Capcom's first video game released in arcades. It is being played here as part of the Capcom Arcade Stadium on PC. The game is similar to Namco's 1982 hit, Xevious. Vulgus is simpler in gameplay - there are no ground installations to destroy. Your craft has a laser and a small supply of more powerful missiles. Starting out over a planetary landscape, you eventually move out into orbit and that's it. Complete the space scene and it returns back to the planet, but harder. There are many small enemies flying around most of the time and occasionally other types of larger craft or formations appear as well. The game features a few collectibles. POW adds another missile to your limited stock. An S icon slows the enemies, a D reduces the speed of their fire and E reduces the number of enemies that appear. The POW symbol may look familiar as it appears in the later Capcom game, 1942, where collecting it upgrades your firepower. Vulgus is the earlier of the two and the mechanics of upgrading your firepower are not as advanced as 1942, though you can see the family resemblance between the two games. Not a terrible shooter - it was popular in arcades at the time - but overshadowed by the much better and more memorable 1942. The graphics are more colourful and detailed than those in Xevious, and the playfield can also scroll from side to side - you are not hemmed in by the screen edges like you are in Xevious or 1942. That's an interesting mechanic you do not see very often. This run was made using Capcom Arcade Stadium on PC (Steam). The date of play was the 23rd September 2024 on PC. The final score was 59,800 points.
