Officiating Basketball with a Crew Of Two - 2 Person Mechanics

The meeting from the Officials Institute (OI) aired on September 14, 2023 and was once again hosted by Chairman of the Board, Joshua Schroeder, and we talked about 2 person mechanics for basketball officials. The discussion and videos of this meeting focus on a variety of plays and situations involving a crew of two and cover where to stand, what to look for and possible variations of such. OI conducts monthly meetings with the intentions of providing instruction for basketball officials of every skill level to help everyone to get better, together. OI believes watching and discussing videos in a group, helps bring awareness to the rules of basketball by providing a platform for attendees to receive instant feedback from fellow officials. Asking questions while analyzing video is a valuable learning tool and by giving repetitive looks at the same play increases retention of rules and philosophies of rules. All videos shown are actual high school basketball videos. The video of this online meeting includes 9 different video clips, all revolve around the topic of 2 person mechanics. Watch all the way to the end to see a bonus clip as well. 0:00 - Intro 1:08 - Three point attempt with two officials signaling. What is the proper procedure for covering three point shots? 5:37 - Primary coverage area for a two person game can be tough to handle so helping your partner out shift your focus can improve the overall coverage of your game. 16:11 - Switching after a non shooting foul in a two person basketball game should involve a switch of positions, every time. 18:26 - Switching on a shooting foul in a 2 person game results in the ruling official staying tableside after reporting. 29:54 - Out of bounds, what is the proper procedure when below the free throw line extended? 34:40 - When officiating basketball, 2 person or 3 person crews, we need to be careful not watch a play looking over our shoulder. Square up. 37:17 - We must stay focused on our primary coverage area and avoid ball watching which could result in not only getting a call wrong, but possibly missing a foul we're not watching. 38:54 - Ball goes out of bounds and after selling the call with a tip signal, official calls partner over to confer. Why shouldn't we do this? 44:25 - Clock is not running during play but when a whistle is blown to stop the clock, it starts to run instead. How do we handle this? Is this correctable? 53:22 - BONUS CLIP technical foul, but did the officials administer properly? 57:35 - Meeting Schedule for the next meeting. Watching video clips is a good way to stay connected to the skill of officiating basketball but education and learning can more effectively be attained doing it in a group with some direction from a key speaker. Remembering specific rules and application of those rules is easier when visual aids are used to present in a way that is easy to listen to and understand. The Officials Institute, and their monthly video review meetings, create a fun environment that allows participants to speak up and voice their opinions on plays without negative retribution or rebuttals. Everyone's opinion is worth something and adds to the overall learning experience that everyone should strive for, regardless of years of experience. Breaking down film in slow motion and freeze frames helps to "retrain our brain" so when we see the same plays in real time we are in a better position mentally to get the call right. #2personmechanics #basketballmechanics #crewoftwo #NFHSbasketballrules #basketballofficial #officialsinstitute For more videos by the Officials Institute subscribe to this channel    / officialsinstitute   OR click the following video links 5 Play Challenge - Backcourt Violations    • Five (5) Backcourt plays to challenge...   Rule Review - Backcourt Violations    • How do you know when it's a backcourt...   August Meeting - Start Develop Finish    • Start Develop Finish. How to officiat...   You can also find us on our website https://officialsinstitute.org/ Join our group on Facebook   / officialsinstitute   All rules referenced in this video are taken from the official rules book provided by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).
