During a game there are primary coverage areas for officials and knowing what to watch is important.

The Officials Institute (OI) meeting of December 14, 2023, hosted by Joshua Schroeder, Chairman of the Board, discussed plays involving primary coverage areas and what to watch during a game. As always, OI conducts these monthly meetings with intent of providing instruction for basketball officials to every officiating level to help basketball officials get better, together. OI believes watching and discussing videos in a group, helps bring awareness to the rules of basketball by providing a platform for attendees to receive instant feedback from fellow officials. Asking questions while analyzing video is a valuable learning tool and by giving repetitive looks at the same play increases retention of rules and philosophies of rules. All videos shown are actual high school basketball videos. The video of this online meeting includes 6 different video clips, all revolve around the topic of what to watch, primary coverage areas. Watch all the way to the end to see a bonus clip as well. 0:00 - Intro 0:33 - Foul in the lane, push from behind, and Center and Trail both have a whistle. What should the officials be watching? 8:25 - Trail reaches across the lane to call a foul right in front of the Center. What should the trail have been watching. 17:14 - Three point shot with two officials signaling the attempt. Who's primary coverage area is it? 26:02 - Double whistle on a foul in the paint. Is it Leads or Trails call? 33:58 - Block/Charge play on the free throw line on Centers side and both Center and Lead blew the whistle. 38:46 - Blarge! What is the penalty and how do you administer this type of play? 55:28 - BONUS CLIP 100:40 - Meeting Schedule for the next meeting. Watching video clips is a good way to stay connected to the skill of officiating basketball but education and learning can more effectively be attained doing it in a group with some direction from a key speaker. Remembering specific rules and application of those rules is easier when visual aids are used to present in a way that is easy to listen to and understand. The Officials Institute, and their monthly video review meetings, create a fun environment that allows participants to speak up and voice their opinions on plays without negative retribution or rebuttals. Everyone's opinion is worth something and adds to the overall learning experience that everyone should strive for, regardless of years of experience. Breaking down film in slow motion and freeze frames helps to "retrain our brain" so when we see the same plays in real time we are in a better position mentally to get the call right. #pca #primarycoveragearea #blarge #NFHSbasketballrules #basketballofficial #officialsinstitute For more videos by the Officials Institute subscribe to this channel    / officialsinstitute   OR click the following video links 5 Play Challenge - Traveling    • How many traveling plays can you get ...   Rule Review - Time Outs    • Take a time out from your routine and...   November Meeting - NFHS POE's    • Videos on NFHS 2023/2024 points of em...   You can also find us on our website https://officialsinstitute.org/ Join our group on Facebook   / officialsinstitute   All rules referenced in this video are taken from the official rules book provided by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).
