Tamworth Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Staffordshire, and around 15 miles northeast of central Birmingham, is the town of Tamworth. During the 8th century, King Offa made Tamworth the capital of Mercia (one of the kingdoms predating England). Tamworth became a frontier town between the Saxons to the west and Vikings to the east, who laid siege to the town in 874. In 911 AD, Æthelflæd, eldest daughter of Alfred the Great, became the sole ruler of Mercia after her husband's death. Much like her father, she ordered the construction of a series of 'burhs' (i.e. fortifications) across Mercia, including Tamworth in 913. In 917 she led a successful campaign to reclaim Derby from the Danes, culminating in the overthrow of the Five Boroughs of the Danelaw (Derby, Leicester, Nottingham, Lincoln and Stamford). Æthelflæd died in 918. Her nephew Æthelstan became the first king of a united England. Æthelflæd is widely regarded as the greatest female ruler ever, despite Saxon history being largely glossed over in British schools! Following the Norman Conquest of England, a motte and bailey castle was built on the site of the older Saxon fortifications, circa 1070. As with other castles of its kind, it was later remodelled in stone. Geographically it overlooks the point at which the Rivers Anker and Tame meet (not a confluence as they only touch, rather than flow into one) at the historic border between Staffordshire and Warwickshire. The town was divided between the two counties up until 1889. In 1345 a great fire broke out in Tamworth, destroying much of the town. However, a slow recovery took place, and by the 17th century it was one of the biggest towns in the midlands. Tamworth's town hall dates from 1701 and is Grade II listed. Tamworth continued to thrive during the Industrial Revolution, with the Rivers Tame and Anker connected to the canals. Local industries included coal, ceramics and brickworks. The arrival of the railways brought further growth to the town. Tamworth station dates from 1847 and is situated at a junction between the West Coast Main Line from London Euston to Glasgow and Edinburgh, and the CrossCountry NE–SW route between Bristol and York. To accommodate both lines, the station is on two levels. One of Tamworth's most famous honorary sons is Robert Peel. Originally from Bury, Peel became a Member of Parliament for Tamworth from 1830 up to his death in 1850 following a horse riding accident, having previously served various other constituencies. In 1834 during his first term as Prime Minister (1834-35), Peel issued the Tamworth Manifesto, upon whose principles the modern British Conservative Party is said to be based. Peel served a second term as Prime Minister from 1841-46. In 1935 Reliant Motor Company was founded in Kettlebrook on the outskirts of Tamworth. Among its products were the famous 3-wheeled vehicles: Reliant Robin, and Reliant Regal - the latter of which was featured as the iconic yellow van in Only Fools and Horses. The company ceased car production in 2002. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
