Rye Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of East Sussex, and around 10 miles northeast of Hastings, is the town of Rye. The town's name derives from an Old English word for 'island', indicating that it was once separate from the mainland. Owing to its coastal location, and its historic shipbuilding industry, it became incorporated into the Confederation of Cinque Ports by the 12th century. These were towns across the southeastern coast that provided naval vessels to the Crown in return for tax exemptions and trading privileges. At the heart of the town is the Church of St Mary. This dates from the 12th century, and is Grade I listed. Many other historic buildings can be seen around the town. These include fortifications against French raids, such as the 13th century Ypres Tower, seen around the start of the walk, and the 14th century gatehouse known as The Landgate, seen at the end of the walk. The latter is the sole surviving medieval fortified entrance to the town which originally consisted of four. Between the 14th and 15th centuries, the River Rother that runs through the town began to silt up. This saw Rye's fortunes change as it began to decline as a port town. On the flip side, it had a prospering wool trade during the medieval era, though this too fell into decline with the river silting and changing trade routes. With around 300 listed buildings, Rye is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Britain. Of particular note is Mermaid Street. This cobbled street contains many historic buildings, including The Mermaid Inn. Seen in detail just after the 15-minute mark, this dates from the early 15th century as a rebuilding of its predecessor which was destroyed in a fire, although the cellars dating from the 12th or 13th century (sources are divided) survived. The inn became associated with the smuggling trade that was rife here during the 18th and 19th centuries, and is said to contain a number of secret passageways that were used to hide contraband. Also of note is The Old Bell (seen at the 21-and-a-half minute mark) - a pub dating from circa 1390, also associated with smuggling. During the 1730s and 1740s the infamous Hawkhurst Gang transported goods between the two pubs via an underground tunnel. In 1851 the railway arrived in Rye courtesy of the South Eastern Railway. Today, the station forms part of the Marshlink Line which runs between Ashford International and Hastings. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
