Winchester Walk: City Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Hampshire, and around 12 miles north of Southampton, is the city of Winchester. Situated by the River Itchen, Winchester began as a Roman town around 70 AD. Its Roman name was Venta Belgarum, meaning capital of the Belgares (the local Celtic tribe who were there prior to the Roman conquest). After the Romans left Britain in the 5th century the settlement was abandoned for a while before the Saxons reclaimed the area, calling it 'Wintanceaster', meaning "Fort Venta", which would later evolve into 'Winchester'. In 871 AD Alfred the Great became king of Wessex and established Winchester as its capital following a victory for the Saxons against the Vikings at the Battle of Ashdown of that year. Following on from this Alfred turned Winchester into a 'burh', i.e. a fortified town designed to withstand future attacks from the Danes. In 1066, following the Battle of Hastings, King Harold's widow, who was staying at Winchester, surrendered the town to the invading Normans. William the Conqueror ordered the construction of Winchester Castle and Winchester Cathedral. The castle was built in 1067 and was the seat of government for the Norman kings for over 100 years. Construction of Winchester Cathedral began in 1079 just adjacent to an older Saxon cathedral, known as Old Minster, whose floor plan is laid out in tiles to this day at the point where it once stood. Winchester suffered a fire in 1141 during the civil war known as The Anarchy. Forces loyal to King Stephen, who at the time was held prisoner in Bristol Castle, clashed with those loyal to Empress Matilda, Stephen's cousin and claimant to the throne. Stephen's forces, aided by his brother Henry, Bishop of Winchester, lay siege to Winchester Castle where Empress Matilda was holed up. Many buildings were destroyed in the resulting fire. Robert of Gloucester was captured and exchanged for Stephen's release and return to the throne. Winchester remained the capital of England up until the 12th century. The Royal Mint was later moved to the new capital - London. Over the centuries that followed Winchester experienced a decline in fortune. During the civil war of the 17th century Winchester changed hands several times before the Parliamentarians prevailed. Under orders from Cromwell Winchester Castle was destroyed, leaving only the Great Hall remaining, as seen in the video. The Great Hall had been built back in the 13th century by Henry III. Much of Winchester was rebuilt during the 18th century with several Georgian houses added. In the century that followed, the arrival of the railway in 1839 brought about a change in fortune for the city. This brought in tourism and new industries into Winchester. In 1847 the first museum opened. In 1857 a market hall was built and between 1871 to 1875 the striking Winchester Guildhall was built. To this day it is the county town of Hampshire, with the Hampshire County Council building situated opposite The Westgate at the western end of the High Street. The Westgate is one of two surviving Medieval fortified gateways in the city, the other being Kingsgate, south of the cathedral. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
