HS2 archaeologists has made a rare discovery at St Mary’s Church in Buckinghamshire. An Anglo-Saxon church has been found beneath the existing derelict church. This kind of structure rarely survives. It consists of whole lengths of foundations, floor surfaces and a possible internal archway. The pre-Norman structure was sealed by the foundation layers of the Norman church, and It's set within its own enclosure. St Mary's Church, Stoke Mandeville, was built in about 1080AD and had a long life as a kind of parish church. It eventually went into disuse in the late 1800s. Before we build bridges, tunnels, tracks and stations, the largest archaeology programme ever undertaken in the UK is taking place along the line of route. The archaeological work will enable us to show that HS2 is more than a railway. It’s a project that will have a huge positive impact on the UK, dramatically enriching our cultural heritage and leaving a lasting legacy for the future.
