In Their Own Words: Bert White – researched and presented by Mavis Warner

Bert White, born in 1887, made chair legs on a lathe in his thatched workshop in Beacon’s Bottom, near Stokenchurch. The men who did this work were known locally as ‘bodgers’. In 1957, when he was interviewed about his trade, Bert seems to be a man of few words, but he had been very active in the local community, especially in church life. This video is part of 'In Their Own Words', a collection of oral histories of the Chilterns, researched and presented by Woodlanders' Lives and Landscapes project, part of the Chalk, Cherries and Chairs Landscape Partnership Scheme. Is part of the Chilterns Stories collection and is presented in videos and a book, describing work in the traditional Chilterns industries of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
