Photo Deconstruction: Creative Natural Light Effect using Hurricane Glass

Today, I want to share with you how I use direct sunlight and hurricane glass to create beautiful textures across the face. Believe it or not, one of the things I love to do is go outside and shoot in natural sunlight. A lot of times I'm in the studio, but I love the quality of direct sun on the face. A lot of people are scared of this. The reason they're so afraid is because hard light can be rough on the texture of the skin. It can show blemishes, but it can also allow you to be really creative. The photo shown is shot out on location with nothing but direct sunlight behind the model. I have the model basically up against a wall, and I chose that wall because the warmth of her skin and her hair matches the color of the paint on it. You can see the beautiful texture across her face which was courtesy of something called Hurricane Glass, which is actually a really big vase that I found at an outlet store. When the direct sunlight hits it, what it does is it casts shadows on the face. If it were an overcast day, you wouldn't see any of those shadows at all. The key is the direct sunlight, because all of that contrasts and all of those hard edges when that vase is close to the subject, it creates those beautiful textures and pattern. Ultimately i moved the vase around holding it in front of the camera until I achieved the desired result. Here's the secret. People are so afraid of what the skin looks like. But if the person has good skin and you've done good hair and makeup, it actually can look just beautiful straight out of camera. I'm shooting with the Canon EOS R, F2.0 85mm very wide open with a fast shutter speed. I love that the EOS R has face and eye tracking. so it's actually tracking the eye closest to camera and giving me perfectly crisp in focus images, and I don't have to worry about nailing my focus. So you can see that all you really need is direct sunlight and something to put in between the light and the subject, something that would cast a pattern. So hopefully you can start thinking of all of those possibilities. And so next time I see you outside, maybe you'll be having a water bottle or piece of glass or who knows? ☀️ Speaking of natural light, be sure to check out my lighting recipe e-book that consists of 20 different natural light setups designed to spark your creativity, and have you outside making wonderful images in no time!
