Photo Deconstruction: Shooting a natural light beauty portrait in direct sunlight

In this video I deconstruct a beauty image lit in direct sunlight. This portrait was created just before noon, typically the time that most photographers try to avoid due to the harsh conditions of the sun. To give a more polished studio look, we placed a piece of savage seamless paper background directly behind the subject. The color “Cocoa” is one of my favorites to use with darker skin tones. I directed the subject to position her arms in a way that would help make a more interesting composition and to lift her chin upwards to avoid too dark shadows in her eyes. Color grading was an important part of this image to help achieve several different variations on the shot-- some emphasizing the warmth of the skin and others with a bit more ‘editorial’ contrast to the image.
