Obstacle or Opportunity? Wise words from Wayne Dyer

“If you believe things will work out you will see opportunities. If you believe things won’t work out you will see obstacles.” That is a quote by Wayne Dyer. I am preaching to myself today! Believe me when I say it takes conscious intention to break old thought patterns, and to train our brains to make new neuropathways that enable us to see opportunities where once we only saw obstacles. The Apostle Paul referred to this when he talked about being “transformed by the renewing of your minds.” But what does that “renewing of my mind” actually look like, and what will it mean in my life? How does it happen? Well, it does not happen by sitting back passively and just hoping our mind is renewed. It also does not happen by going to church more, praying more, saying more positive affirmations, or even reading inspirational books or listening to inspirational podcasts more often. It isn't even a matter of more will-power. None of those things are bad or wrong in and of themselves, but they can all be practiced on a very surface and superficial level. The renewing of our mind must go deep into the subconscious where the habitual and deeply ingrained ways of thinking, believing, feeling and behaving are rooted. This "renewing of our mind" awakens us to a Higher Consciousness that allows us to break those old patterns that have driven and controlled our life in so many ways. We just have to be "willing to wake-up." When we are awake, rather than sleep-walking through life, we see everything differently. We are no longer so easily triggered by other people or the the difficult circumstances we encounter in life. We simply have to be willing....willing to let-go of the old.....willing to be renewed. When we are truly "awake" in this life, our mind is more responsive and less reactive. What once we labeled an "obstacle" can now be seen as an "opportunity." And more importantly, we have courage, creativity and faith within ourself to step into those transformational opportunities....opportunities that will bear good fruit......fruit that will last for all eternity. So I guess the question is: Do I want to see opportunities that lead to life and peace and love and freedom and to equanimity; or am I content to see obstacles that keep me stuck, repeating the same thoughts, feelings and actions day in and day out? Oh, dear friends, may I always say "yes" to seeing the opportunities and "no" to seeing the obstacles. It is a life-long practice of renewing and transformation.....until I take my very last breath. Amen.
