Trains at the new Middle Gorge station - Metro Trains Melbourne

In this video we visit Middle Gorge, one of the newest train stations in Melbourne, opening on the 26th August 2018 as part of the Mernda Rail Extension. The project involved an 8km extension of the South Morang line to the new terminus at Mernda, with two intermediate stations at Middle Gorge and Hawkstowe. Here at Middle Gorge we see various X'trapolis trains during the lovely golden afternoon sun. Middle Gorge was built on the site on the original South Morang station which closed in 1959 when the line to Whittlesea closed. The station name itself attracted controversy among locals as the station is named after Middle Gorge Park, which is over a kilometer away. During planning for the project the station was codenamed Marymede after the secondary school adjacent to the station, but that name couldn't be used as it supposedly went against place-naming conventions (being named after a business?). The name Middle Gorge sounds like a fantastical location out of Lord of the Rings, full of hobbits, dragons and... (ok I admit, I haven't watched any of the Lord of the Rings movies). Personally I don't like Middle Gorge station that much; it reminds me of West Footscray. Yes the tall canopies look impressive architecturally but it doesn't provide any meaningful weather protection to the station. There's also a long shelter on platform 1 but it's too narrow and has no backing screen, again providing little protection from the wind and rain. What should have been done instead was to join the two large canopies on both platforms together to create a large overarching roof to provide better protection from the wind and rain while maintaining the station's unique architecture. If Adelaide can do it for the new Oaklands station why can't we do it in Melbourne? Date: July 2019. Subscribe to ThebusofdoomFSX: https://www.youtube.com/user/Thebusof...
