The Longpigs - On And On (cover by Tommy Miller)

Hey everyone! This is my first real crack at doing my own YouTube channel video so thanks for taking the time to watch this video. The theme for this is "first". Not "to be the first" to cover this song in particular but this performance representing a series of firsts for me. I'll start by saying that this song, "On and On", is by a British band called The Longpigs. They were never very popular by any standard but their music hit me at a very crucial time. I use their music to mean this song because it remains to be the only song that I really know by them. Their album "The Sun Is Often Out" was difficult to find in America when I heard it so I settled for listening to "On and On" over and over again on the 1997 KROQ new music sampler that you get with the KROQ calendar. I loved it from the first time I heard it. The rest of the album featured bands like Dance Hall Crahsers, Smashmouth, Cornershop, and Incubus. I still think it was the best KQOQ sampler to date. "On and On" really hit me because of the cool guitar line that happens in the intro. I don't know why the progression grabbed me, but it did and I obsessed over how that guitar line was totally awesome in my mind. It became one of the first things I taught myself on guitar, if not the first guitar line I ever learned. As my ears got better at hearing the rest of the music I learned the whole song and I have been playing it and sneaking it into performances ever since. One of my band mates in high school thought I wrote the song, that's how much I played it. So it was one of the first songs I had taught myself on guitar, from the first KROQ sampler I ever got, but the kicker is that this performance is on the first instrument I ever learned to play. Now a bit of biography: the banjo was the first instrument I picked up in 2nd grade and yes it was by choice. I got made fun of because nobody at the time understood why I wanted to play the instrument. The reason that I gave my mom when picking out musical instruments were in the words of Steve Martin: "You can never be sad when you're playing the banjo." So to perform the first song I had taught myself on the first instrument I ever learned seemed appropriate to me. I also like how the really awesome guitar line translated to the banjo, and I like how the timbre of the instrument helps bring balance to the vocal melody. Thanks again for checking out this first experiment into my the world of YouTube bedroom covers... well not officially. I actually did a cover of "The Book of Love" by The Magnetic Fields a few years ago but I promptly took it down out of embarrassment. Maybe I'll bring it back and do a banjo cover of that song in the future, or a cover of the song in general would be cool. That song is very pretty. But let's consider this one "the first" for my official channel :) Thank you to The Longpigs for writing this song and reaching me at a time when I was first feeling the unquenchable thirst for new music. It is unfortunate that the band dwindled into obscurity soon after I had encountered their wonderful song "On and On". The irony is palpable that a band that wrote a song titled "On and On" couldn't do just that. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do and I hope that my rendition can help keep their music spinning. Thanks Steve Martin for inspiring me to pick up an instrument that started my musical journey. Whenever I'm feeling down I still pick up an instrument and play. Also, I want to be the first to note my impressive cowlick on the back of my head. I literally woke up one morning and decided to record myself playing the banjo. The take was so good that I didn't want to go back and do another one for the sake of fixing my hair. I promise I'll comb my hair in future vids :)
