HOW TO: Replicate a Ford F150 Door Skin Seam Sealer Bead

Ryan Marrinan, 3M Application Engineer, shows some tips and tricks for how to replicate a door skin seam sealer bead on a Ford F150. Something unique to Ford is their squared-off edge that still looks like a flowed-out seam sealer. Step 1: Prep your panel (00:39) Prep your panel with epoxy primer, making sure there’s no exposed bare metal. Scuff and tape it off to the exact width of the bead you’re trying to replicate. Step 2: Prep your seam sealer (00:50) We’re using our 3M™ Factory-Match Seam Sealer 08323 here. Equalize the cartridge upright into a paper towel, making sure there are equal parts A and B coming out. Apply the static mixing nozzle to the cartridge and dispense a little bit onto a mixing board or back into the same paper towel. Just create a couple inches of material, making sure it’s thoroughly mixed as it comes through the tip. Step 3: Lay the material (01:24) Caulk out the material and maintain an angle so you’re pushing the seam sealer into the hem flange. Come in with a spreader that’s been cut down to a third of its size and knock the material down, making sure it reaches all the way from tape to tape. Step 4: Remove the tape (02:19) Start at the same location where you started taping, caulking and knocking down the material. Pull the tape off backwards against itself to cut the edge clean. Pull straight back or even inward just a little bit to get a nice clean edge. The Factory-Match Seam Sealer has a slight amount of sag, so it will round just a little bit to get a nice look just like on the trucks. Step 5: Pinch off the corners (03:35) Take a spreader again and pinch off the corners. While the material is still in working condition, clean it up. If you need to you can use 3M General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner 08984 or Specialty Adhesive Remover 38987 as a tooling aid to create that final look. Important note: There are of course many factors and variables that can affect an individual repair, so the technician and repair facility need to evaluate each specific application and repair process, including relevant vehicle, part and OEM guidelines, and determine what is appropriate for that repair.
