HOW TO: Replicate a Dodge Seam Sealer Bead

Ryan Marrinan, 3M Application Engineer, responds to user questions about how to replicate the seam sealer bead on Dodge trucks and caravans. Step 1: Prep your panel (00:33) Get your panel prepped with epoxy primer, making sure there’s no bare metal exposed. Tape out the width of the bead to establish your desired pattern and the look of the final finish. Step 2: Prep your seam sealer (00:50) For this application we’re using our 3M NVH Dampening Material 04274, a two-part urethane that also makes a great seam sealer. As always, equalize the cartridge upright into a paper towel to make sure you have equal dispersion of parts A and B. Once the static mixing nozzle is on and the ring locked down, dispense a little bit of material out onto the mixing board, the paper towel or another safe surface. Step 3: Lay the material (01:25) Dispense the material and work it inward toward the seam, making sure you have good adhesion to the surface. If you need more material, lay it right next to the dispensed material and work it into itself so it doesn’t pull away or introduce air. Step 4: Replicate the bead (02:07) Take a spreader that’s been cut in half and hold it at a very low angle to knock down the seam sealer and spread it from tape to tape to ensure you get a straight edge. Cut a gray Scotchbrite pad down to a smaller size, fold it in half and dab it over the surface to add the texture and get that taped look. Step 5: Remove the tape (03:22) Pull the tape off backwards against itself. Pull inward just a little bit so you don’t create an unnecessary wave or shelf off the edge of the seam sealer. Use the tape to create a nice, clean cut edge. Once you’re done, walk away and let it cure. Important note: There are of course many factors and variables that can affect an individual repair, so the technician and repair facility need to evaluate each specific application and repair process, including relevant vehicle, part and OEM guidelines, and determine what is appropriate for that repair.
