2022: 2ndXVSchoolsCupSemi Final: RBAI v MCB - 5 Feb 2022

RBAI 8-15 MCB EXTENDED HIGHLIGHTS 2022 2nd XV Schools Cup - Semi-final On a damp and very breezy day (making video-ing difficult) RBAI hosted MCB in the semi-final of the 2nd XV Schools Cup. RBAI started the better of the two teams and after plenty of possession in the MCB half - the right wing scored in his corner for a 5-0 lead (the wind meant there were no successful try conversions on the day). Half way through the first period MCB started to show that they could hold on to the ball for some phases and that got them back into the game - especially when their left wing Liam Black got over the line in his corner for 5-5. Before halftime RBAI won a penalty in front of the posts and Inst's out-half Sweetlove kicked it over for 8-5. That was to be the halftime score. In the second half - bar the last 5 minutes of it - MCB dominated the game making very few errors in the set piece and not conceding many penalties. They showed how they could run phases even in such windy conditions and they kept Inst quiet for 30 minutes whilst MCB scored two tries from up close - firstly by their No 6 and then their second row No 4. This gave them a 8-15 lead with only minutes left. Less than five minutes from the end Inst had their chances to even up the score. After a lucky refs call that gave them a lineout they shouldn't have got they took a clean ball in the lineout and on the third peel from a ruck Oscar Dunbar looked like he had got over but the ref disagreed and called it held up. RBAI did have one more chance when they tapped and went following a penalty just a few metres out but strong MCB defence created a turnover and allowed them to clear their lines. MCB played the time out and kicked to touch eventually to allow the ref to blow his whistle for full-time and a 8-15 win for MCB in a well-deserved victory - it was a superb second-half performance in difficult conditions from the MCB lads. Methody went on to lift the 2nds Cup when they defeated Campbell College at Cranmore 12-0 in the final on Saturday 26 February 2022.
