MCB 21-17 Campbell College Belfast EXTENDED HIGHIGHTS MCB met CCB in the final of the 2nd XV Schools Cup. The game was originally to be at RBAI's Cranmore pitch but there was a late change to venue to Harlequins RFC. As I wasn't aware of the change of venue I turned up at RBAI and by the time I got redirected and to Harlequins I missed the first few minutes. As I arrived CCB's inside centre was taking a penalty which he converted for a 3-0 lead for the East Belfast school. Half way through the first half MCB's No 8 forced his way over the line and dotted down for 3-5. Despite slipping as he kicked his conversion MCB's scrum half still managed to knock it through the posts for 3-7. For the remainder of the half their was much effort put in by both teams but a series of knock-ons form both teams saw the game get quite fragmented. The ref blew for halftime with the score still 3-7. Ten minutes into the second half the MCB fullback collected a CCB kick on the right near his '22 and he then went on an impressively evasive run that saw him break a number of tackles down his right wing to finish close to the posts - converted for 3-14. A few minutes later CCB had MCB under pressure on their line and after a number of rucks the ball was moved through the 10's hands for CCB's right wing to come in off his wing and score close to the posts - converted for 10-14. However only a couple of minutes later with MCB mauling on CCB's 22 the MCB No 6 joined the maul - took the ball and found a gap in CCB's maul defence. He made it to the line to score. An impressive conversion from MCB's scrum half made it 10-21. MCB missed a penalty effort from distance shortly afterwards but then CCB applied increasing pressure on MCB's defence and they worked a penalty for a kick to touch close to MCB's goal area. CCB collected the throw and mauled. MCB pulled down the maul a couple of metres from the line and the referee chose to call it as a penalty try. 17-21 but there was to be time for just one more play. MCB kicked off and CCB started to work the ball through their forwards but MCB's hooker managed to take a CCB pass in close contact and MCB's No 9 kicked the ball to touch and the ref blew his whistle. 17-21 the final score. Congratulations to MCB on winning the 2023 2ND XV Schools Cup.
