Of all the essays written by the prominent American essayist, poet, philosopher, and lecturer Ralph Waldo Emerson, the one that has influenced me the most is “The Over-Soul.” The sublime words contained in this great work first reached my eyes, ears, and mind when I was an undergraduate student at Columbia University and came across an audio recording of the book, The Science of Being Great, by the New Age author Wallace D. Wattles. The portion of “The Over-Soul” which I have shared in this video had been included at the very end of The Science of Being Great, and it moved me to tears the first time that I heard it. How beautiful, how uplifting, and how profound the message of this fundamental essay is; it contains abundant truth. It expounds on the presence of a great power within, around, and about us all, that seeks to create and experience great and beautiful things through us. This great power is “The Over-Soul,” which is simply another term for that ineffable force we attempt to describe as Universal Mind, Universal Intelligence, God, The Almighty, etc. A thorough awareness and understanding of this power is of immense psychological value. “The Over-Soul” is in you, in me, in nature, and in all of us. 🤍
