The word “strong-box” has been used in reference to a sturdy case for the preservation of money and valuables. I wish to propose the idea of a “psychological strong-box” in which we store the difficulties of our past and the dilemmas of our present which ultimately contribute to making us stronger and wiser. While we may initially look upon such experiences as burdens, they are truly the most valuable gifts that life can offer us. They educate us, making spiritual and psychological growth possible. The “strong-box” metaphor came to me this morning as I was reading the poem, “Then Laugh,” by Bertha Adams Backus, which I have shared in this video. “Build for yourself a strong box, / Fashion each part with care; / When it’s strong as your hand can make it, / Put all your troubles there; / Hide there all thought of your failures, / And each bitter cup that you quaff; / Lock all your heartaches within it, / Then sit on the lid and laugh.” Then laugh—laugh at the things that were expected to make you weak but ended up making you strong. Laugh because you triumphed over your past misdeeds and failures as well as your current problems and fears. The joke is on them; you are the winner now. 🩷
