Today we need to talk about what we mean when we talk about skills "contributing" to a profession. We know each skill point is worth more than the point before it which is why it gets progressively harder to get skills. We also know we can standardize skill values via implants. But what do we mean when we say a skill "contributes" to a profession? After all professions are what determine which items we can use and to what extent. So the best way to explain it is via piggy banks! If we have a piggy bank and dedicate ourselves to a 5% savings plan or "contribution" per paycheck then we simply put 5% of our paycheck into the piggy bank. In the same way the profession itself is the piggy bank. Not all of our skills go into that piggy bank; but we do contribute a small amount. In an extreme example a new player with 0 skills across the board who ate 10,000 evade skill points worth of implants would have a level 25 Evader profession. Why? Because Evade the skills is contributing 25% to Evader the profession! If skills contributed 100% then 10,000 skill points would make us level 100. But hey that's not fair! A lot of our skill points are going to waste! Well...yes and no. It's true that there are a few skills that only contribute to one profession. But usually these skills contribute at a VERY high rate. A prime example being Bioregenesis skill which ONLY contributes to the Biotropic profession. BUT it contributes at the exceedingly high rate of 45%. What's more common is a skill contributing to multiple or even dozens of professions. It's like living in a world where you can spread your ENTIRE paycheck over multiple piggy banks! Some piggy banks you may put 5% into. Others you may put 10% into. So while we may feel like we're really not getting the value from out skills when we look at a single profession when we look at ALL of the professions the skill contributes to we can see we are getting a TON of value from our skills! There are even some skills, like Anatomy, that contribute to so many professions at such a high rate it actually gives you MORE value than it should! We hope that viewing skills through the skill piggy bank you can better understand how skills help your profession levels grow.
