Ivy, The Royal Enfield Classic 350 goes to East Yorkshire looking for the Tolkien connection on some of my favourite coastal roads, there and back again! Some of my all-time favourite roads are on the coast of East Yorkshire. From Hornsea down through Withernsea to Kilnsea, at the start of the Spurn point peninsula, bend after bend beckons you on. The first time I rode this road, I was 16, since then I have ridden it many times, and 48 years later it still has the magic it always has. What I didn’t know until reading a book the other week, was one of the most influential authors of the 20th century was stationed along this very road during WW1. He was JRR Tolkien, author of Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit and The Silmarillion, he developed several mystical languages and the legends of Middle Earth. After the war Tolkien established his academic career at the University of Leeds, joining as a Reader in 1920 aged 28 before being promoted to Professor within a few years. By the time he left in 1925 he had made the School a UK leader in Old Icelandic language and literature. I’ve never read any of his books but reading about his stay in East Yorkshire I couldn’t put it down. Did his stay here give him ideas for his books? We definitely know of one, from a letter to his son Christopher after the death of his beloved wife Edith. Keep your eyes open, see if you can spot an Elf or even a Hobbit along the ride.
