Can The Royal Enfield Classic 350 find Abbeys, Pies and Legends in North Yorkshire?

We’re back on the road today looking for Abbeys, Pies and Legends in North in Yorkshire. The Royal Enfield Classic 350 explores a wooded dale by the River Rye, finding Rievaulx Abbey, the first Cistercian monastery in the north of England, founded in 1132 by twelve monks from Clairvaux Abbey. Its remote location suited the order's ideal of a strict life of prayer and self-sufficiency with little contact with the outside world. Close to Rievalux is the market town of Helmsley, famed as being the only market town in the North Yorkshire National Park. It’s other claim to fame is Hunters Pork Pies, it just has to be done. Refreshed again it’s on the road to Byland Abbey, founded as a Savigniac abbey in January 1135 and was absorbed by the Cistercian order in 1147. It was not an easy start for the community which had had to move five times before settling at New Byland, near Coxwold in 1177. Impressive remains including the lower half of a huge rose window which was the inspiration for the same window at York Minster. An interesting feature is the preservation of some of the brightly coloured medieval floor tiles. Newburgh Priory is a Grade 1 listed Tudor building near Coxwold. Originally a house of Augustinian canons, it was founded in 1145 and became a family home following the dissolution of the priory in 1538. The present house was built in the late 16th century, substantially remodelled by 4th Viscount Fauconberg 1725-45 and further restored in the 1960s. It’s one of the rumoured burial sites of Oliver Cromwell. Let’s fire up the Classic 350 and go for a ride.
