I'm continuing to work on using our new AEA R84A Active Ribbon Mic, and I haven’t done as much recording of my 1939 Gibson L-5 with it. So I threw down a quick rhythm track using my 1932 L-5, and then jammed a bit over “Coquette”, playing an intro, chorded melody and an improvised chord solo chorus, followed by some single note soloing. The 1939 is way brighter, so it really cuts through a band live, but it might sound a little crunchy coming if you're listening to this on a phone. The 1932 sounds so warm and lovely, especially under a ribbon mic, so I tend to use it for solo work, and in my trio. But in a band context, you really can’t beat the 1939. Both the rhythm and lead tracks were captured with the mic positioned as you see it, in front of my 1932 Gibson L-5. There's no additional EQ, save for a HPF at 100hz, and only some vintage-style compression and touch of extra room sound added. This style of Chord-melody playing and soloing is my own version of the playing of Allan Reuss, who played with Benny Goodman from 1935-1938 before going onto play with many of the best big bands and combos of the 30's and 40's, before settling into studio work in the late 40's.
