Jonathan Stout - "On the Sunny Side of the Street 2024'" - AEA R84A Ribbon Mic - 1932 Gibson L-5

I recently got the opportunity to test out both the AEA R84 ribbon mic, and it's active counterpart, the R84A. We've used vintage RCA ribbon mics as well as AEA's vintage-style ribbon mics for almost all of our studio recordings, but I never though it would make sense to own one and to use it for home recording. But after visiting my buddy Tim Ferguson (on instagram as "@thefoxtooth") I realized something like AEA's R84 could be an option after all, even in my house, which has no acoustic treatment to speak of. I was blown away with how great the R84 and R84A sounded on my guitars without any EQ (save for a HPF to shelve 100hz). Moreover, I was blown away at how I was able to control the amount of ambience, even with a figure 8 mic on a single source in an untreated room. So, our band ended up buying an AEA R84A Active Ribbon Mic, and it's been great to continue to work with. I decided to go with the Active version just to give a little extra gain before noise without needing an external preamp, AND because it requires phantom power instead of being damaged by it. Full disclosure, AEA lent me the mics to see if they'd work for me, and I did get an artist discount.
