If you're a parent returning to work, stop making excuses and getting in your own way. I’ve received dozens of messages over the past few months from people who have been stay-at-home parents for 15-20 years, unsure about their job prospects. Let me tell you, as someone who's been in hiring for over 20 years, attitude and personality are what matter most. I often hire based on these qualities over experience because many experienced candidates come with bad habits from toxic work environments. When constructing a resume, focus on your transferable skills. Did you manage a household, organize schedules, or handle finances? All these tasks demonstrate valuable skills like organization, budgeting, and leadership. List them on your resume, and come to interviews with a great attitude. I’d hire someone with the right mindset over someone with irrelevant experience. No job is perfect to vet someone for, and often, people who seem perfect in interviews turn out to be disappointing hires. Others, who aren’t perfect on paper, become rock stars because of their attitude and willingness to learn. Don’t disqualify yourself just because your life experiences aren’t traditional office roles. Many jobs I’ve had, I wasn’t “qualified” for, but I learned by putting in the effort. Today, we have endless free resources to learn anything—use them. Don’t self-reject based on job descriptions. If you think you can do a job, apply. Leverage tools like ChatGPT to tailor your resume. Highlight the skills you’ve honed while raising kids or managing life, and emphasize your people skills and ability to organize. Stop putting yourself down. You might surprise yourself with the opportunities you get by networking and applying for jobs that seem within your reach. Employers value someone who’s willing to learn. You won’t get the job if you don’t apply, and self-rejection will only hold you back. Dive in, do your best, and let your experience shine. #workfromhome #parentstoworkforce #jobsearchtips #careerchange #mindsetmatters #resumetips #selfgrowth #returntowork #hiringtips #careertransition #confidence
