(17 Jul 1999) Albanian/Nat Animosity between Serbs and ethnic Albanians in the northern Kosovo town of Mitrovica continued to rise on Saturday. French KFOR troops were needed to keep the two angry ethnic groups apart in the divided city. The troops are hoping to stop the demonstrations before they reach flash point. The atmosphere in the town of town of Mitrovica remains tense. French troops struggled to keep the two groups apart. Members of both ethnic groups claim the KFOR troops are making life impossible in the town. The Albanian residents of Mitrovica continue to complain that the Serb residents are prohibiting them from being able to return to their homes. SOUNDBITE (English) "We just want to go to our homes, you know, we live on the other side of the bridge and they don't let us go there, the Serbs are staying there, they are gathered, you know, and they are provocating us with ethnic songs and the French just don't let us go to our homes." SUPERCAPTION: Vox pop The town will be visited later in the day by the U-N administrator for Kosovo, Bernard Kouchner. Mitrovica is one of three towns to be visited by Kouchner and a delegation of the U-N's interim advisory council, which includes Serb and Albanian representatives. The group only has consultative powers, but it marks the first step towards returning political power to Kosovo's population. The participants will also visit Gniljane in eastern Kosovo and Orahovac in the southwest. All three towns have been plagued by continuing ethnic clashes since the end of NATO airstrikes.
