That Old Black Magic - Harold Arlen & Johnny Mercer

#med (Music.Every.Day) Day 353 of my daily video posting project. I have been working on this project since November 2023--learning and posting a video of new piano music every day! Today's video is "That Old Black Magic". Two legends worked together for this great piece: Harold Arlen composed the music and Johnny Mercer provided the lyrics. This arrangement comes from the collection "Jazz Piano Solos - Late Night Jazz". The piece was featured in the film "Star Spangled Rhythm", first sung by Johnny Johnston. It got nominated for an Academy Award in 1943. The song got recorded by Glenn Miller (reached number one on Billboard), Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., and BIlly Daniels. The story is that Johnny Mercer wanted a song about magic, and asked Harold Arlen to write more music to make the song longer. Even with the additional composing, the song took about 3 hours total to write! Pretty amazing! Tune in tomorrow for more of my #music.every.day experiment!
