COPAT - Correctional Officer Physical Abilities Test

The COPAT or the Correctional Officer Physical Abilities Test is a key part of our recruitment process and is used for selecting new recruits for BC Corrections. Applicants have 2 minutes, 50 seconds to complete a 7-station course, which is based on the physical requirements of what an officer is likely to encounter in their work. COPAT has three main components: mobility, agility and speed. Those components are measured through a series of seven obstacles or stations, which recruits have a total of two minutes and fifty seconds to complete. The Seven Stations Include: 1. A sprint from start to a set of stairs 2. The requirement to run up and down six flights of stairs 3. An obstacle course that moves through corridors, hallways, etc. 4. Pushing open a door or moving an obstacle/person 5. Pulling open a door or moving an obstacle/person 6. Gaining control over a situation or resisting subject 7. Carrying a 70-pound weight out of the corridor Each of the seven test activities must be completed successfully prior to moving onto the next item in the circuit. Failure to complete any of the test items will disqualify the candidate. All test items, apart from the weight carry, must be completed within the defined time limit.
