The RCMP Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation (referred to as PARE) is an occupational test used to assess a person's ability to perform the physical demands of police work. It is used in the Cadet selection process for recruitment. It consists of three different stations: an obstacle course, a physical control and a torso bag carry. During the obstacle course, the applicant must jump over a 5' (1.5 m) mat, run up and down stairs, jump over two 18" (0.45 m) high hurdles, perform a vault jump over a 3' (0.91 m) railing and then finish with a controlled fall. This course is repeated six times. During the physical control (push and pull) station, the applicant must push 70 lbs (32 kg) (80 lbs. (36.3 kg) for police officers) while completing six 180 degree arcs, then complete four controlled falls (two front, two back), and then pull 70 lbs. (32 kg) during six complete 180 degree arcs. Finally, the torso bag carry requires the applicant to carry the bag to safety. This involves lifting it from the ground and carrying it over a distance of 50' (15 m). This bag weighs 80 lbs. (36.3 kg) for applicants and 100 lbs. (45.36 kg) for police officers.
