Somehow I was able to contain myself this long and save one of the most dear video game songs I have to my heart for last. I can't think of a more hauntingly beautiful song in all of video gaming and anyone who spent any amount of time playing SM64 walked away humming this. I would even go so far as to say that this is probably the best overworld theme ever in my opinion. The chromaticism and perfect blend of classical and jazz really brings this overworld back to feeling like the very first one on the NES. It's a pretty bare song, while heavy in harmony is light in that there's no strong percussive element. I really wanted to capture that in the beginning of this cover whether or not staccato lead guitars sound silly on their own. I thought it was a charm in the original that couldn't be ignored. In fact, there was really nothing I felt I could leave out! Can you name all three snippets from the game I quoted in the second half of the solo? I feel like at the end of every year there was a huge leap in my mixing ability right towards the end after a slightly, well, experimental stage. It sucks a bit to be calling it quits on weekly vids after this next one, but despite my bounds on the post-production side of things, I think it's safe to say my psyche could use a break. Not to mention my schedule. I played around with utilizing snare verb in a different way than before, something I've been wanting to try for a while and felt it really added to the mix. The rhythm guitars and bass were written to be way more involved than the already intricate leads so clarity was important here. It was tough to allocate enough head room in the lower mids for all the instruments but everyone seems to just cut those frequencies out and I really want to employ them more from now on. Anyways, a bittersweet ending to weekly cover videos with a song among my top 10 favorites of all time. Year 3 is almost over! It's been a crazy ride but there's one more video left! I've done the previous two years' videos as a music video style outdoor vid, but I wanna try something different this year. Something I've seen many other people do and always wanted to try. It could be awesome or it could tank! Needless to say, I'm excited!
