SID EARGLE - Cheap Thrills

I don't know much about this Sid Eargle character. But no matter how you split it, this person is an inventor; feverishly twisting knobs, flipping switches, and stomping pedals in the uncompromising pursuit of creating the world's first auditory Frankensteinian nightmare, a southern-fried monstrosity of sweaty, soulful rock and roll music that's been haphazardly stitched together by tracks of eclectic tonal hues. There's an appeal to Sid Eargle's music that I can best describe, with total respect and admiration, as a head-first dolphin-dive into a garbage can filled with the finest garage rock anthems you've never heard of -- like a one-man Killed By Death compilation that is ceaseless in its production of underground punk rock gems. That description is still very much applicable to this latest release. I've written about (and drawn for) Sid's previous efforts, "Ill Violent" (https://sideargle.bandcamp.com/album/..., an album primarily occupied by rabid flails of guitars, straining to belt out their three-part power chord progressions in time to the unrelenting slews of beastial drumbeats, as the vocal hooks swaggered and stomped between the lines of a melodic playfulness, and an animalistic fervor. While those songwriting muscles are still flexed in this new album, the music in "Cheap Thrills" has begun to take on this almost... gothic, deep-seeded horror influence that permeates into every swampy, monolithic chord that blares from your speakers, in a knuckle-dragging advance that threatens to crack the foundation beneath your feet with its musical immensity. It's heavy, it's hard-hitting, it's resolute in its desire to break your face with riffage that's amplified its grooviness to a noxious pitch. With the vocals often engaging you with a morose drawl, buried deep beneath a floor of reverb and delay, "Cheap Thrills" is an organ-driven burner that feels as if it's only one werewolf's howl away from fully embodying the VHS-horror-type spirit that fuels its distorted dirges. Of course, all of this is only scratching the surface as to what this album contains -- I haven't even touched on all of the atmospheric instrumentals that are loaded onto here as well. You've got a splash of classical blues rock, a smidgen of proto-punk, a tiny pinch of rocksteady, even some ambient synth experimentation here and there. You'll get the sense that Sid is willing to throw whatever the hell he feels like into these albums, and if there's one thing I respect most from a solo project, it's an artistic vision that's clearly made zero concessions. Sid Eargle is a hidden talent, and said talents are quickly improving with each and every subsequent release. Like I mentioned before, I really don't know much of the history behind this project and its sole mastermind -- but based off of his recent efforts, I'm very much looking forward to learning more. Sid's a bonafide rock and roller, in ways that all of us have only begun to fully realize.
