I recorded Great Dunstan a second time, this time from the cloisters of the Cathedral. Great Dunstan is the largest bell in Kent, weighing in at 62-2-9cwt (3,179kg) and ringing out the note of B. It was cast in 1762 by Lester and Pack of Whitechapel, London, the predecessors of the Whitechapel Bell Foundry, who cast the ring of twelve in 1981. Prior to 1981, Dunstan was hung dead on the roof of the South West Tower (St George's Tower or the Oxford Tower) above the ring of twelve. In 1981, Dunstan was taken down and rehung for slow swinging and placed in the North West Tower (Arundel Tower) and rung automatically. Before the old twelve was recast, there were plans to make Dunstan the tenor of the new twelve. However, due to the relative weakness of the tower, it was decided that a lighter ring hung lower in the tower to reduce structural stress. Enjoy the sound of this glorious bell!
