The Bell of the Church of the Blessed Sacrament, Exeter, Devon

This bell has been on my list of "must ring!" bells for a number of years! I finally managed to ring it, with ‪@ProfMoose‬ in September of 2024. Many thanks to the priest of the church Fr Jonathan for allowing this visit! The Roman Catholic Church of the Blessed Sacrament is sited on Fore Street in the Heavitree suburb of Exeter, Devon. It is a large and impressive Italianate structure, built of red brick with Portland stone dressings. Construction started on Sunday the 7th of 1931, with the foundation stone being laid by John Patrick Barrett, the Bishop of Plymouth. Construction of the rest of the building took around a year and it was finally opened on the 28th of May 1932, with a Pontifical Mass celebrated the next day. Not ten years later, during WWII, a bomb struck the tower and severely damaged it before ricocheting off and hitting the presbytery which was totally destroyed. After the second world war, the tower was not restored to its original height and was instead left as a truncated stump with a small copper clad wooden cap. The now shortened tower contains the third heaviest swinging bell in South West England - after Hosanna of Buckfast Abbey (7.5 tons) and Great Bede of Downside Abbey (5.5 tons). It is a great bell called Emmanuel, cast in 1931 by the John Taylor and Co. bell foundry of Loughborough. It weighs 77-0-12cwt (3,917kg), just shy of four tons, and rings out the note of Ab. It was specifically tuned to Ab to match the bells at nearby St Michael's in Heavitree as a major 5th. So in a way, it is effectively a distant bourdon bell for that ring! It is hung on an arched headstock with a counterweighted clapper, meaning it is a slow swinger. It is an absolutely SPECTACULAR bell. The Roman Catholic parish are very proud of this bell, and rightly so. Enjoy!
