Sound Design | REEL REVIEW EP.1 | Simple Tips to Improve Slow Motion Guns Tutorial

Join the Discord!   / discord   Hey guys! In today's Reel Review we're taking a look at a scene which involves some very detailed and cool looking visuals, but unfortunately lacks some of the necessary coolness in the sound design. I go over what to listen for, common beginner mistakes, simple steps to improve, and even show some examples of how to fix it! Stick around for my next video where I actually recreate part of this scene using publicly available library sounds! Links: IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1218771/?... When I was first starting my journey as a sound designer over 7 years ago, I had absolutely no idea which way to turn. Coming from a musical background (as most of us do) I realized I was experiencing the same analysis-paralysis that I had when creating music. In this digital age there are an overwhelming amount of tools and material at our fingertips, and one of the hardest things to overcome can be knowing which way to turn. The best way to solve this is to become a student of sound, and train your ears to know when to stop or when to keep going, and which direction to head. It's just like learning anything else - you have to understand the big picture first, and then you can better understand the microscopic pieces in an actual context. Over time you will easily be able to listen to material and think of how it should or could sound. One thing to watch out for though is becoming too obsessed with current and previous sound design - it's very easy to start designing sound which simply replicates past designers' work and therefore failing to innovate. Most artists imitate, but only true masters can innovate! This takes years, if not decades in the field though, so just start with listening to the previous masters and hearing what and why they did what they did. At the end of the day our job is as story tellers. This can quickly go from being very easy to very difficult, depending on what the story calls for. Most films have a very easy path laid out for the sound designer... car crash here, gun shot there, guy gets punched in the face near the end, and that's it. Other films/mediums create a black hole of challenges. Look at Christopher Nolan's films for example! Listen to what the designers did there, and think about why it works as well as it does. Remember I will answer EVERY comment that asks a question, so if I leave anything out in these videos or you just want to say hi, please feel free! The goal here isn't for me to show off or build myself up; but to build a helpful and encouraging community that we can all gain inspiration and guidance from. I am very open to learning stuff from you guys, so please share any tips or tricks you have or can think of during these videos! Everything show in the above video is purely for entertainment, I do not guarantee any specific results or outcomes from it. If there are any copyright or trademark issues please contact me directly at my business address listed on my YouTube profile and I will happily work with you to resolve it! Thanks and much love, Braden
