In my Bell Brass comparison of 40th vs 50th anniversary model    • Tama Bell Brass BB-156 40th vs 50th A...   I was wondering about the sound difference of the two snares. I felt like it was less of a shell thing and more of a snare wires vs. mild compression setting thing in garage band. So I swapped the wires on my 40th anniversary and made a quick comparison. I was using the standard 42strand Tama wires MS42R14C vs. Puresound CPB1424. And yea: with less wires, the shell sound becomes more dominant and the sound moves more in the direction of the 50th anniversary snare with its 18-20strand extended wires, i.e. it sounds darker, more bell/gong like. I think Ill keep the 42 strands on my 40th anniversary, to create a clearly audible difference of the two snares. As much as I love the 50th anniversary snare, the Mastercraft mechanism limits wire experiments somewhat and 42 strands can sound pretty fat and cool. ;)
