Every morning when he was running Alcoa, Paul would stop by Ritter's Diner at 5 a.m. and read all the newspapers and talk with one of Ritter's owners' Pete who he said knew as much about Greece as many in the state department. Paul came from humble beginnings and turned Alcoa, an old metal company, into one of the most profitable companies in the world at the same time many other of Pittsburgh's corporation were moving away or folding. He did it by rethinking the way management and labor worked, valuing everyone at the company, and changing business practices in a way that many would soon adapt including Silicon Valley. When President Bush appointed him Treasury Secretary, he was not afraid to speak truth to power, including saying the the WMD's on intelligence photos from Iraq looked like just factories to him, and opposing that war. Paul could have lived anywhere in the world, and he chose to live in Pittsburgh because, though he was not originally from here, to him it was home. It was a great honor to have this conversation with him and Pete. .
