Dr. Tom Starzl is often called "the father of organ transplantation" and one of the greatest surgeons of all time. But we got to talk to the great man in his office above a fast food restaurant across from the towering Thomas E. Starzl biomedical building named after him. He preferred to be here because he liked to take his dogs to work. In the early days, when perfecting the world's first liver transplant Starzl had to use dogs to test the procedure, but he was a great animal lover and rescued many dogs which he and his wife Joy cherished. He was the most cited scientific figure of the 20th century and in his lifetime, he turned what was science fiction when he was growing up in Iowa-- the idea of transplanting an organ from one human being to another-- into a reality that would change the world of medicine and save countless lives. But as you can see here, Dr. Starzl also had a wicked sense of humor. It would take ten years, but eventually he sat down for a more in depth interview which lead to the film "Burden of Genius" which I produced with Laura Davis and which was directed by her husband, Tjardus Greidanus . See www.burdengofgeniusfilm.com. But this gives a sense of another side of Tom Starzl. Enjoy this outtake from the movie.
