Work by Deborah Kelemen and others that indicates that humans have an early-emerging and persistent tendency to think of biological entities in teleological terms. This tendency persists into adulthood even among professional scientists.I put this broader discussion on the aptness of teleological thinking in conversation with Kant’s remarks on teleological thinking in the third and first Critique. Helen De Cruz is holder of the Danforth Chair in the Humanities at Saint Louis University, Missouri, US. Her publications are in empirically-informed philosophy of cognitive science, philosophy of religion, social epistemology, and metaphilosophy. She is author of, recently, Religious Disagreement (Cambridge University Press, 2019), and co-editor of Philosophy through Science Fiction Stories: Exploring the Boundaries of the Possible (Bloomsbury, 2021).
